Description

Chewy caramel apple bars made with a brown sugar oat crust, sliced Granny Smith apples, walnuts, and gooey caramel topping.

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups quick cooking oats

1 ½ cups packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup salted butter, melted

4 cups Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored and sliced

½ cup chopped walnuts

1 ½ cups caramel topping

½ cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.

2. Combine flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, and melted butter until crumbly.

3. Press half the oat mixture into the prepared pan and bake for 10 minutes.

4. Layer sliced apples and chopped walnuts over the warm bottom crust.

5. Whisk caramel topping and ½ cup flour together until smooth; drizzle over apples.

6. Scatter remaining oat crumble over top, bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden, and cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Whisking flour into the caramel topping keeps the sauce from becoming too runny. Cool completely before slicing into squares.
