Description

Flaky and golden apple hand pies loaded with spiced tender apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, drizzled with salted caramel.

Ingredients

Scale

Homemade Pie Crust (makes 2 crusts, use both)

3 medium apples, peeled and diced into small bite-size pieces (about 2 and 1/2 cups, or 300g, diced)

1/3 cup (70g) granulated sugar

2 Tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

egg wash: 1 large egg beaten with 1 Tablespoon (15ml) milk

optional: homemade salted caramel for topping

Instructions

1. Melt 2 tbsp butter in a saucepan, add diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice; cook 6 minutes and cool.

2. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C), roll out pie crusts, and cut into 12 dough circles or rectangles.

3. Spoon 2 tbsp cooled apple filling onto half of the dough cutouts.

4. Brush edges with egg wash, place remaining dough cutouts over filling, and crimp edges tightly with a fork.

5. Cut vent slits in tops, brush with egg wash, and bake at 400°F for 20 to 22 minutes until golden brown.

6. Cool on pan for 10 minutes and drizzle with optional homemade salted caramel before serving.

Notes

Dice apples small for neat pockets. Pre-cook and cool apple filling to keep crust crisp.
