Description
Fluffy and moist Apple French toast casserole loaded with cubed French bread, vanilla custard, and caramelized cinnamon Granny Smith apples.
Ingredients
cooking spray
4 eggs, beaten
½ cup half-and-half
½ cup milk
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 (8 ounce) loaf French bread, cut into small cubes
¼ cup butter
3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into small dice
¼ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C), coat an 8×8-inch pan with cooking spray, and place half the bread cubes in the bottom.
2. Sauté diced apples in melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon for 5 to 7 minutes until caramelized.
3. Whisk beaten eggs, half-and-half, milk, white sugar, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth.
4. Layer two-thirds of apples over bread, top with remaining bread, and scatter remaining apples over top.
5. Pour custard evenly over bread, press down gently, and rest 10 minutes.
6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and set; cool 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Use stale bread for best custard absorption. Sauté apples until tender before assembling.
