Description

Old-fashioned apple dumplings wrapped in flaky pie crust and baked in a sweet cinnamon-vanilla sugar syrup until golden brown.

Ingredients

Scale

1 (14.1 ounce) double-crust pie pastry, thawed

6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored

½ cup butter, divided

¾ cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

3 cups water

2 cups white sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and roll pie pastry into 6 equal square pieces.

2. Mix ¾ cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, and ½ tsp nutmeg in a bowl.

3. Place 1 peeled and cored apple on each pastry square, fill center with spice mixture and a piece of butter, and fold corners up to seal.

4. Boil 3 cups water, 2 cups white sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and remaining ¼ cup butter in a saucepan for 5 minutes.

5. Place wrapped apples in a 9×13-inch dish, pour hot syrup around them, and bake for 35 to 40 minutes until golden.

6. Spoon warm pan syrup over dumplings and serve warm.

Notes

Pinch pastry seams firmly together so crust stays sealed around apples during baking. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
