Sourdough Bread is a timeless classic with a crispy golden crust and a soft, tangy interior. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or dipping, this homemade bread is healthier, flavorful, and bakery-quality.
Ingredients
1 cup active sourdough starter
1 ½ cups warm water
4 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
2 tsp salt
Optional: 1 tsp sugar or honey for slight sweetness
Cornmeal or flour for dusting
Instructions
1. Feed your starter 4–12 hours before baking.
2. In a large bowl, mix starter, water, and flour until fully combined. Let rest 30 minutes (autolyse).
3. Add salt and fold dough onto itself several times.
4. Bulk ferment for 4–6 hours, folding every 30–60 minutes until doubled in size.
5. Shape the dough into a round or oval loaf, place in a floured basket or bowl.
6. Final proof for 2–4 hours, or overnight in the fridge.
7. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C) with a Dutch oven inside.
8. Transfer dough to hot Dutch oven, score the top, cover, and bake 20 minutes.
9. Remove lid and bake 20–25 minutes until golden.
10. Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
– Store at room temperature in a paper bag for 2–3 days.
– Freeze wrapped for up to 3 months.
– Slice before freezing for convenience.
– Reheat in oven to restore crust.
