Description

Festive Cranberry Trifle with layers of fluffy cake, tart cranberries, creamy custard, and whipped cream, perfect for holidays and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

1 box vanilla or yellow cake mix (or homemade equivalent)

3 eggs

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 cup water

2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup orange juice

1 teaspoon orange zest

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

4 large egg yolks

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 cups heavy whipping cream

1/4 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare cake mix according to package instructions (or your homemade recipe). Bake in a 9×13-inch pan and allow to cool. Cut into 1-inch cubes.

2. In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, orange juice, and zest. Cook over medium heat until cranberries burst and sauce thickens slightly. Let cool.

3. In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar and cornstarch. Gradually whisk in milk and egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Cool slightly.

4. Beat heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form.

5. Assemble trifle in a large glass bowl or individual cups: layer cake cubes, cranberry sauce, custard, and whipped cream. Repeat layers, finishing with whipped cream. Garnish with fresh cranberries or chocolate shavings.

Notes

Cake alternatives: pound cake, sponge cake, or gingerbread.

Fruit variations: add pomegranate seeds or raspberries.

Alcohol option: brush cake layers with a bit of liqueur.

Mini trifles: serve in individual cups or jars.

Make ahead: assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate.
